§ 34-267. Off-street automobile parking and storage

  • (a) Off-street automobile parking or storage space shall be provided on every lot on which any of the uses as set forth in the table in subsection (d) of this section are established. Such automobile parking or storage space shall be provided with vehicular access to a street or alley and shall be equal in area to at least the minimum requirements for the specific use as set forth below. Each off-street parking space shall be at least eight feet six inches wide and 18 feet deep.

    (b) If the required automobile parking or storage space cannot be provided on the same lot on which the principal use is located, the board of appeals may permit such space to be provided on other off-street property, provided such space is within 500 feet of such principal use. Such space shall be associated with the permitted use and shall not thereafter be reduced or encroached upon in any manner.

    (c) All off-street automobile parking and storage space in residential districts shall be arranged so that vehicles will not be required to back onto a major or arterial street, road or highway when leaving the premises.

    (d) Off-street automobile parking and storage space shall be provided as follows:

    Two-family and multifamily residential structures Two spaces for each dwelling unit
    Rooming and boarding houses One space for each rental unit
    Churches, synagogues, and other places of worship One space for each four seats in the main assembly room
    Tourist homes, tourist courts, or motels One space for each guest accommodation
    Hospitals, nursing homes, and similar institutions One space for each two beds intended for patients, plus one space for each employee at maximum employment on a single shift
    Retail businesses One space for each 200 square feet of total floor area
    Service stations Three spaces for each grease rack or similar facility, plus one space for each 250 square feet of total floor area
    Mortuaries and funeral parlors One space for each four seats in the chapel, one additional space for each two employees, one additional space for each resident family, and one additional space for each funeral vehicle
    Restaurants and similar eating establishments One space for each two seats provided for patron use and one additional space for each two employees
    Wholesaling One space for each employee
    Industrial One space for each employee at maximum employment on a single shift, with additional space for shift change
    Schools One space for each six seats in the main assembly room, plus one space for each employee
